STATCOM, FlexVAr

Green Blue offers cost effective and reliable STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) solutions for different needs of industry and utility. FlexVAr® is an excellent solution to solve the following challenging power quality problems:

  • Voltage Regulation
  • Reactive Power Compensation
  • Voltage/Load Unbalance
  • Flicker Reduction
  • Voltage and Power Oscillations
  • Harmonic Filtration

Utility

The utilities need to manage the power system issues such as voltage sags/swells, flicker, active/reactive power flow control and other phenomena caused by intermittent energy flows and fluctuations.

Transmission type FlexVAr® as a turn-key solution provides voltage regulation as well as control of reactive power flow. Furthermore, by using Power Oscillation Identifier systems with FlexVAr®, interarea oscillations expected to arise in the large interconnected transmission systems can be damped.

Benefits: Reactive Power Control, Voltage Regulation, Oscillation Damping, Capacity Increase

Wind/Solar Farms

The increasing number of wind farms causes voltage stability problems due to their intermittent nature. Solar farms are also required to act like conventional generation units. For these purposes, the utilities tend to impose strict grid codes for their interconnections. FlexVAr® is an excellent interconnection solution complied with grid codes thanks to its excellent control of voltage and reactive power compensation capabilities.

Benefits: Grid Code Compliance, Voltage Stabilization, Connection Capacity Increase, LVRT Function

Iron & Steel (Arc and Ladle Furnaces)

Owing to nonlinear and stochastic nature of the electric arc and ladle melt furnaces, various furnace parameters such as the furnace voltage and current, the real and reactive power exhibit significant and sudden variations in time. These variations cause flicker and harmonic problems at the point of common coupling (PCC). FlexVAr® provides flicker and harmonic reduction as well as regulating furnace bus voltage for maximum power transfer purpose.

Benefits: Voltage Stabilization, Plant Productivity Increase, Grid Code Compliance for Flicker and Harmonics

Mining

The loads used like dragline excavators, mining shovels, cranes, and conveyor belts, etc. in Mining industry contains many large motors that require significant reactive power. Especially the weak grids suffer from high reactive power demands, causing voltage sags and fluctuations. These situations deteriorate reliability of the power systems. FlexVAr® provides smooth operation of the motors and stabilizes the power system.

Benefits: Reactive Power Control, Voltage Regulation, Capacity and Equipment Lifetime Increase

Welding

During the welding process, the current changes from a few amperes to several thousand amperes in a very short time and this causes several power quality problems like low power factor, flicker, voltage regulation, unbalance, etc. Thanks to very fast acting feature, FlexVAr® is an excellent all-in-one solution to overcome these power quality problems at the same time.

Benefits: Improved Weld Quality, Flickerless and Smooth Plant Operation, Balanced Loads, Longer Equipment Life

Oil&Gas

Medium to large electrical variable speed drivers (SCR based DC and VFD based AC) are the main cause of power quality problems in Oil&Gas industry. Apart from large reactive power demand, high-magnitude low orders harmonics are very problematic, which disrupt control systems and increase equipment failures.

FlexVAr® is the combined superior solution for large reactive power demand and low-order harmonics filtration.

Benefits: Grid Code Compliance for Harmonics, Longer Equipment Life, Plant Productivity Increase

The key components for rolling mills operations are high power variable speed drivers (VFDs). Due to rectifier units of these VFDs, the power factor value is very low and some low-order current harmonics become dominant in the power system.

FlexVAr® provides both reactive power compensation and harmonic filtration at the same time and increases the reliability of the plant.

Benefits: Compliance of Power Quality Standards, Plant Productivity Increase, Longer Equipment Life

Modular and Flexible System Design Concept

FlexVAr® is based on Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) technology with advanced digital control system consisting of up-to-date DSPs and FPGAs. According to reactive power needed, one or more than one modular multilevel converters (MMC) can be used for FlexVAr® with or without coupling transformer which depends on the system voltage. Each MMC has its own control system and in any internal fault, the related MMC is disconnected automatically and the remaining ones continue to operate without any system interruption.

Containerized Solution is adopted for packaging of MMCs, control system panels and water cooling pumps which provides easy installation in the field as well as transportation.

Capacitor banks designed as LC(R) type harmonic filters can also be used for loads having more capacitive reactive power requirement than inductive, in combination with MMCs (Hybrid STATCOM Solution) to decrease the overall system cost.

Modular Multilevel Converter Structure

Multilevel STATCOM is based on Modular Multilevel Converter Topology using modular H-bridge/half-bridge basic units with IGBT modules. The number of series connected basic units for each phase/arm depends on the system voltage.

The basic units are designed in such a way that it is easy to exchange any faulty units with the new ones during maintenance. Due to perfect voltage balancing of capacitors of each basic unit, by specially developed equalization algorithms, the output current and voltage of FlexVAr® comply with international harmonic standards.

Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) is used as the modulation technique with a moderate switching frequency to have optimum switching loss of IGBTs.

Water cooling technology is the means of cooling down the power semiconductor switches mounted on the cold plates.

Panel Type STATCOM

FlexVAr® is based on Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) technology with advanced digital control system and user-friendly HMI. Modularity is the unique feature of MMC and it uses modular H-bridge (HB) basic units with IGBT modules. Due to modular and flexible design concept, the size and output voltage of STATCOM can easily be adjusted to the customer’s needs by arranging the number of HBs in series for each phase/arm.
